Press Release: 25th ANNUAL WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

ARLENE SCHNITZER AND GERT BOYLE TO BE HONORED OCTOBER 4TH

Secretary of State Kate Brown, Justice Betty Roberts, S. Renee Mitchell, Tiffany Hill & Mary Volm to join in the festivities

The Silver Anniversary of the Annual Women of Achievement Awards is shaping up to be quite the affair!  S. Renee Mitchell will be officiating as this year’s emcee and Secretary of State Kate Brown will be on hand to present the awards.

In addition, Tiffany Hinano Hill, the first deaf student ever to compete in Poetry Out Loud, will be performing Diane Wakoski’s “Inside Out.”  Prior to Ms. Hill’s participation, Poetry Out Loud had previously celebrated poetry strictly as an oral art form.

Local artist Mary Volm has also been commissioned to create this year’s Silver Anniversary Awards.  She will be working with Bullseye Glass to create a kiln cast glass sculpture worthy of the honorees.

This year’s celebration takes off with the State motto as its 2009 theme: SHE FLIES WITH HER OWN WINGS.  The Sunday brunch celebration will be held at the Nines on October 4th in downtown Portland from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm.  The Silent Auction features something for everyone!  Mother daughter horseback riding lessons, spa packages, Trailblazer tickets, gift baskets from Japan and Nicaragua, exquisite ceramics and fused glass art, Portland Opera tickets, personal training sessions, and more!

The theme exemplifies the women to be honored this Silver Anniversary year: Arlene Schnitzer and Gert Boyle.  Both women are well known and instantly recognized virtually everywhere in Oregon for the breadth and the depth of their leadership and contributions across multiple areas.  Each has made extraordinary inroads and created unparalleled opportunities for women in our State, spanning decades of hard work, exemplary leadership, and immense generosity.  This same spirit and leadership by example can also be said of this year’s keynote speaker, Justice Betty Roberts; the first woman appointed to the Oregon Court of Appeals, and the first woman to serve on the Oregon Supreme Court.

The Annual Women of Achievement Awards celebration is fun-filled brunch attended by business leaders, community advocacy organizations, politicians, and citizens. We invite you to take advantage of this occasion to celebrate those who have made significant contributions to improving the lives of women in Oregon.  Proceeds from this event support the work of the Oregon Commission for Women.

Individual tickets are available for $50.00 per person.  For table sales or sponsorship information, please go to the website at friendsofocw.org or call 503-378-2139.
